I can help with one thing.  Where to unpack the source.  It doesnt 
matter!  I just unpacked lm_sensors-2.8.5.tar.gz in my home directory. 
low and behold a new directory lm_sensor-2.8.5 cd into that directory & 
read README's & INSTALL and do make, make-install.  I didn't say it 
worked, but that's how it should go.
