[newbie] GZIP/GUNZIP

I just loaded Mandrake 10 and want to add new programs like the latest version of Open Office, AOL Instant Messenger and a couple of others so I downloaded those files. They are tar'd and gzipped. However, I do not seem to have a program in KDE to unzip them. When I right click on them it does not give me the choice to unzip them because it does not know what they are. I have also downloaded the program KARCHIVER as an RPM but cannot get it to load becasue it fails file dependencies for a file that is in the RPM. I am at a stand still. DO you have any advice on how to get these programs unzipped so I can install them or what might be the problem with the KARCHIVER RPM?   Thanks, Steve
