A friend of mine has been having nothing but problems with this PC she
purchased a few months ago. Windows-XP Pro was pre-installed on it and
ran fairly well for a month or so, but even after trying 4 different anti-virus programs, the system was seriously infected.

I've been trying to install Mandrake, using various versions and install
methods and nothing seems to work. At different stages of the install,
it just freezes. I've managed to install Mandrake 10.1 Mini, but that's
as far as I can get.

This POS has an Intel 845 onboard video adapter, which can use up to a
whopping 8MB's (sneer!) of shared memory, but that doesn't seem to help
at all. Setting the display to 1 MB lets me do a text install of
Mandrake Mini, but I'm unable to update the install.

Are there any special tweaks or BIOS adjustments I can do that will allow me to finish a complete install? I'm fairly sure that once an install is completed that the system will boot up fine. Although it's sold by Compaq and the BIOS is apparently owned by HP, the board is actually an MSI-6577 motherboard.

TIA for any help that someone can provide, cause this one has me stumped.
