Google for "The Ultimate Boot CD". It's got three Free DOS implementations, three tiny Linux distros. Memory testers, CPU Burners, and more to the point, a complete set of manufacturers hard-drive diagnostic and initialisation tools. (And quite a bit more I haven't explored yet.) It's rather unlikely that the software killed the drive, I think you'll find that it is recoverable. I can well recommend this CD; I've just gone through the diagnostic/repair process from hell on a friend's PC, and this thing was worth its weight in gold. -- Richard Urwin
