Thanks Hoyt, but already resolved...sort of :-\ Ended up (see below) that I needed to use a different floppy image from the default. Turns out, the install froze at the very end, didn't reboot, and now the CDROM won't stay closed and the system won't boot. I'm thinkin' the CDROM got fried by some 'eject' command at the end of the install, but I'm just guessing on that one. I'm taking this as a hint that MDK 10 is probably not good to load on this old-timer. I've wanted to do some experimenting, and I'm thinkin' a more 'stock' kernel is better for an old cranky machine like this, so I'm gonna try a Debian network install from floppies, just for fun.
