Yes.  Internal and USB modem support is spotty at best.  It is far better to 
buy an external ethernet modem which you can be sure will work ok with 
minimum fuss.  I can also recommend spending a little more money and get 
yourself an ADSL router (maybe even a wireless one) with built-in SPI 
firewall for that extra layer of security and future-proofing.

I've used a D-Link DSL302G for a whle now, mostly good, except the web-based 
config needs IE to work properly.  Instead look for one that uses javascript 
web-based config.  I've also installed a Linksys WAG54G Wireless ADSL Router 
which works like a dream.
