It would be a good idea to find a copy of the GPL and read it.  It will 
reassure you a lot.

The main part of a Mandrake distribution is totally free, and buying those 
disks will be perfectly legitimate.  Those who buy the PowerPack are paying 
quite a lot more for the right to use certain commercial packages, but you 
many not need any of those.
