In fact, this did not solve the problem, as, although the size of
fonts of GTK applications is modified, it cannot be conveniently
adjusted. I found a much better solution in the archives of
alt.os.linux.mandrake, which I quote here:

�have this in my ~/.gtkrc-2.0 (if you don't have one, create one):

#v+
gtk-font-name="Sans 12"
#v-

You might have to re-login for it to take effect.�

One can replace Sans and 12 with, respectively, the name of our
preferred font and the desired size.
