Fill 3 gal empty into 5 gal
Fill 3 gal fill 5 gal full.
You have 1 gal left in bucket.
Empty 5 gal pail.
pour remaining one gal into 5 gal
file three gal and empty into 5 gal pail.
voila, you have 4 gal in the five gal pail.
