Ok. Here's how I would plot/plan this out.
1.) Obtain a partitioning program that is bootable on CD or diskette
(Partition Magic, Parted, whatever)
2.) Create a single partition on hda for your MS Windows (10gb should be
fine) and set it as a primary partition.
3.) Move that partition to the END of the disk - it will still maintain
a count of 1, but it's at the back of the disk which is good.
4.) Get all yer MS Windows stuff setup and happy. All the drivers, yadda
yadda yadda. Patches and whatnot, yadda yadda yadda. Reboot numerous
times - it's required.
5.) AFTER that is done, created an extended partition, and then two
others - 1 being a 512mb linux SWAP partition, the remaining as FAT32
partition for you data sharing, games or whatever. Once done, reboot to
make sure that MS Windows works still.
6.) Install MDK on the 40gb drive; the only partition NOT living on that
would be your SWAP partition of 512mb which lives on the hda drive.
7.) At the end of the install, you will install lilo to the MBR and
reboot. Boot into linux fist to make sure it's all happy-dappy; once
done, reboot and you'll be able to switch between the two happily.
Mind you, you can rearrange how you want your partitions, but I believe
solely in the K.I.S.S. principle and have less hassles that way.
HTH!

Potahto' Pictures Productions Presents: THE TATERNATOR: Cyborg spud
returns from the future to present-day McDonald's restaurant to kill the
potatoess (girl 'tater) who will give birth to the world's largest
french fry (The Dark Powers of Burger King are clearly behind this).
Most quotable line: "Ah'll be baked..." A FISTFUL OF FRIES: Western in
which our hero, The Spud with No Name, rides into a town that's deprived
of carbohydrates thanks to the evil takeover of the low-cal Scallopinni
Brothers. Plenty of smokeouts, fry-em-ups, and general butter-melting by
all. FOR A FEW FRIES MORE: Takes up where AFOF left off! Cameo by Walter
Cronkite, as every man's common 'tater!
