I didn't have any other dms installed - but I certainly will do now, just as a 
safeguard.  Anyway, panic over.  .kde renamed solved the problem nicely.  
There doesn't look to be too much important missing, and I still have .kdeold 
if I need to hunt for anything.  Thanks, Kaj.
