Many thanks for the information, this does seem to be the problem area.

I haven't managed to sort it yet, but still don't understand exactly
whats going on.

There are two kernels mentioned in lilo setup, 2.4 & 2.6 both lead to
kernel panic if selected. the initrd.img points to the 2.6 kernel, but
there are initrd2.4 & 2.6.img files, and point to their respective
vmlinuz.

Still, if I didn't like a challenge I'd be sat in front of a windows box
with a noose round my neck.
