If you're using the graphical login, you can always hit CTRL+ALT+F2 and
get to a console login - login as root, check the /tmp directory for
garbage...

Is the /home partition on the same drive/partition as / ?

You might even want to remove unnecessary packages - programs that you
do not use...

How big is the partition that / lives on ?
