It's OK to switch the display off, if it doesn't do so automatically.
If you prefer downing the box at the end of the day, that's also fine. :-)
If you use modem communications and you live in an area where lightning storms are common, it's a good idea to disconnect the phone jack from your modem when you are not using it, but it's not really necessary to shut down the machine.
