There is a service in Mandrake called netplugd, which handles non-static
network connections (i.e. those that are plugged and unplugged while the
computer is on). The problem is that it is disabled by default, which means
that network connections are only checked at boot time.

I've been through enough Mdk installs now to always check this one (during the
install, near the end, it says something like "m of n services eelected"; you
can click the button to go in a review the list of services and select which
ones are enabled; I always review this and make some changes over the
defaults).

Go into to mcc (System -> Configuration -> Configure Your Computer), select
the System table, then the Services icon. This will give you a list of all
known system services and their current status. Pressing the info button on
one will give you a short description.

Scroll down to netplugd. If I'm right, it will say "stopped" in the status
column, and the "on boot" box will not be checked. Click the "on boot" check
box to enable this service to be started on every boot. Then press the Start
button to start it now. This should fix the problem.

You can also, while you're there, go to the network service (right after
netplugd), and press Stop, then press Start. This is the equivalent of the
"service network restart" command that Kaj mentioned. If your cable is
plugged in and your NIC is configured correctly, this should connect you to
the network.
