[newbie] /home -- final question

Dear friends:

I notice that my hda, which is supposed to be 4.3 gig, is actually 3.8G,
and my hdb, which is supposed to be 3.2 gig is actually 2.9G.

Could someone please explain to me what's happened to the missing 500
meg and 300 meg respectively?
