May I suggest ImageMagik?  It is on your disks, has lots of
features (resize, crop, sharpen, color balance, etc) and has a
shallow learning curve.  The only thing I don't like about it is
saving images is somewhat clunky.

Yes - Anne recommends it, but suggests a newer version. Unfortuntaely the info is in my mandrake messages which I can't get to at present. There is a website though I think.
