I had this just yesterday, and after mucking around a great deal, I
found that after setting the new association with rightclick_on_file >
Properties > Edit File Type (spanner icon) > General tab > "Add"
whatever in "application preference order" > go to Embedding tab > click
on "show file in separate viewer" > click apply > go back to general tab
> click apply again (just in case) > click OK (and maybe click apply
again beforehand.) I've just rebooted this morning, and pdf remained
associated with acroread, and nedit remained a second option for .ps
btw, its Mdk10.0 and KDE.
