[newbie] Vertical Lines while using X

Hi,

does anybody knows why when i'm working with the X,
suddenly the screen turns to a screen full of vertical
lines? After that the sistem get hang. The lines are
black lines over a white screen.

i'm able to work with the system, but it's disgusting
when it happens, because i lose everything.
