If your modem is a "winmodem", it most likely will not work with Linux. The
problem is not Linux, it is that some of the hardware normally found on a modem
card has been replaced by software devices which have been included in the
Windows drivers for these winmodems. My best suggestion is to purchase either
an external modem, or an internal one which is not a Winmodem. If you elect
to use an internal modem, make sure it plugs into an ISA slot, and that you can
manually configure the COM port (and IRQ) it will use with jumper settings on
the card. These two precautions should ensure that you get a genuine hardware
modem, and not another winmodem.
