Aha. I learned something today. That is good.

So I downloaded libstdc++ and now the configure says
"The c++ compiler cannot make executables."
"/usr/bin/ld cannot open -lstdc++ no such file"
I have searched and cannot find -lstdc++ so I am
stuck again.
