I am using an APC Back-UPS 500 and I am trying
to get their "Powerchute" software (for detecting
when the UPS is on battery power to shut the computer
down gracefully) to work under Mandrake 6.0, but during the
configuration of the software I get the message:
-------------------------
WARNING: Port must be configured for modem control in order to work with
a
"Simple" Signaling UPS
-------------------------
The software is trying to communicate with the UPS
through /dev/ttyS2 (I had to add an SIIG serial port
card since my mouse and modem take up the other serial
ports - I set the jumpers and did a "setserial /dev/ttyS2 irq 5").
There seems to be some amount of communication happening
since the green light on the UPS goes off and back on during the
installation stage when the warning message above happens.
But, the Powerchute software will not come up because it says
it can't communicate with the UPS. I have used it successfully
under Windows 95, so I think the hardware is okay.
I contacted APC, and their advice was:
------
RedHat Linux comes with all available ports set up for "Local Control
Port
(Smart Signaling)". In most cases this setting does not need to be
changed
even when using a simple signaling UPS. If you are, however,
experiencing
communication problems, you can set the port to "Modem Dial-Out Only
(Simple Signaling)" by opening a terminal window and typing:
control-panel
This will launch the Control Panel application. Then select "Modem
Configuration" and highlight the port you are using. Click OK and the
port
should then be setup for Simple Signaling.
------
However, the instructions in "Modem Configuration" says that this
just causes a soft link to be made for /dev/modem. I tried it anyway
and it doesn't seem to help (not to mention the fact that this would
probably not be so good for using my modem...). I called APC and
they didn't have any further suggestions. Any ideas out there?
Thanks,
Bill
