When I go through the installation of Linux on a Gateway PC, the only problem it runs into is with video.  When it tests video at 1024x768, I get several lines at the top of the screen.  At 800x600, I think I get the dialogue box that I am supposed to respond to but the characters are black (foreground and background).  Otherwise, text interface, network, etc. are working fine...

How do I get around this and get a proper XWindows environment working here?

BTW - I did select the SiS 6342 AGP (or something like that video, so I am using the right video card).
Monitor is not listed so I use 'Generic Multisync'.

I hope someone has run across this and resolved it easily.
