[newbie] problems with sound

i opened up a mp3 file in kmpg i pressed play it played for about 4
seconds with no music then a error message come up and said;

"Kmpg couldn't open the audio device!
All decoders stopped"

can anyone tell me what the problem is and how i can fix it
the chipsit for the sound card is a cmi8338
