Then you need to have more than one resolution listed xf86config file.
Try XF86Setup
It's totally graphical.  It will allow you to choose several possible
resolutions (e.g., 640x480; 800x600; etc...) and will make the necessary
changes to xf86config.
Save the changes, restart x, and then try <cntrl><alt><+/->.  It should now
work.
