[newbie] modem probs

hello...

I am brand new to linux so I don't know much...
I just configured my kppp for a dial up connection and when it
initializes the modem the screen freezes and I have to ctrl-alt-backsp
out of it and start over...
modem: Motorola SM56 56k voice modem
mandrake 6.1

any suggestions?
