The HP (Hewlett Packard) 7xx series (many of them if not all of them)
are indeed winprinters, but can be coaxed into working.  The EPSON 7xx
series is another story, and yes, they work right out of the box.  But
the problem I had with the 700 I tried briefly was (other than jamming
paper and that sort of problem) that no matter what I tried, I couldn't
get a nice darn-near-hang-on-the-wall photo quality pic out of it in
linux and it was easy in windows.  

What linux "driver" did you download for the EPSON 740 and where did you
get it?  Are you just using printtool?  Ghostscript?  What?
