What class of install did you select?  I had the same problem.  If you
select to install as a server, eventhough you select the KDE and Gnome
packages, it will not automatically set them up for you. Here is what I did:

Choose "expert" and choose "normal" when asked about install classes.  then
when you select the KDE and gnome packages they will get setup properly.
Aparently choosing server (which is what I did first) only installs the
basics, and doesn't give some some of the extras.

NOTE:  choosing normal takes up much more disk space.  I had to unselect
"games" and "misc" to get it under 800MB.

If you install this way and tell install to start X on boot, you will get
the nice KDE login screen and not the 2 xterms with the blue background.
