They weren't.  If I log on as another user, all is fine.  It's like the log
on manager(kdm?) isn't shutting down.  It keeps the background from that,
and won't let me run anything in the terminal or under blackbox's
menu(although certain things work under the kde menu). I'm running
blackbox/kde.
