Try going to a site at  www.emuse.net , there you will find lots of help
particularly download one file called "The Linux Newbies Manual " which is
well written in fairly simple terms, mainly slanted towards Red Hat. This
might be a good starter prior to O'Reillys which I must admit I have not yet
read although intending to soon.
