Ok, if you have a general idea of how computers and hardware work, and how
they're connected together, just ignore this. This solution is the equivalent of
the "Did you check the power cord" line most helpdesks give you.
Anyway, here goes:
a) I assume you're talking about not being able to play audio CD's, and that
you're not referring to the audio contained on a DVD-movie. Well, audio CD's
don't have to be mounted like regular CD-Roms, or DVD's. Just use a cd player
such as "cdp" in the console, or one of the graphical ones I'm sure you'll find
in your start-menu, and the things should play.
b) If that doesn't work. Check your mixer settings (aumix in console, or one of
the graphical utils) and make sure your CD output is not muted, or set to zero.
c) If that still doesn't work, make sure you have a little cable connected from
the cdrom to your soundcard. As you said: "our new soundcard". Did you, or the
guy/girl who installed it, connect the CD audio cable as well? That's the little
cable; not that broad flatcable, and not the one that comes from the power
supply (ok, ok... I think you get the idea now ;-) If in doubt, check the manual
of the soundboard/dvd-drive.
Well, these are the first 3 things I usually check nowadays, after having opened
my uncle's case when he had the same problem, double-checking every connection,
only to find out he'd set the CD Audio channel to "mute" in his W95. Bottom
line: sometimes one _does_ need to check if the power cord is plugged ;)
Oh yeah, it might also be a good idea to check if there's sound when connecting
speakers/headset to the output on the front of your DVD-drive (only for audio
CD's that is). This way you can rule out the chance of a defective drive.
