You're not completely crazy - that's what tar did to me too.  But MC 
worked fine.  I dove into the tarball, copied what I needed (a whole 
directory) to my /usr/local.

Not sure what the not local means.

And now that the tar error has been independently reproduced, I can 
call it a bug.  :)
