Hi, folks
I have bin bussy getting set-up in Paris (still looking for an appartement
:-( ) for te last week, but below are some quickies i picked-up
in the meantime. Some of these are rather imformative, others may not
be. I intend to post similar lists here from time to time, and if you spot
anything usefull, send it to me with subject "RFAQ". Here there come.
By the way, I have changed a default mailing-list policy. I hope there
will be less spam in the list now.

Mailing lists:
Q: How do I unsubscribe?
A: We have a nice web-interface. http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/flists.php3
for subscribing/unsubscribing.
Q: Why do people people ignore me/get mad at me whenever I post a question. Why?
A: four most usuall cases are
1) Oftoppic or annoying e-mails.
1) Uninnformative/empty "Subject" line ("help!", "problem" or so)
2) posting in html instead of the plain ASCII.
3) posting many questions in one e-mail
Q: There is too much trafic on the mailing list!
A: Yes. There is a lot of traffic. You can always use the archives instead
(http://www.mail-archive.com/<LISTNAME>@linux-mandrake.com/).
Another possibility would be setting up ".procmailrc" which authomatically
saves mails from the lists to folders.
Instalation problems
Q: I cannot acces my IDE CDROM/CDRW after installation! What now?
A: Known bug. /dev/cdrom points to /dev/hdb (hdc, hdd), while the CDROM has
to be accessed as /dev/scd0 (1,2..) because of the ide=scsi line in
/etc/lilo.conf. Just change the symbolic link.
Q: I installed the new kernel, and now I cannot boot anymore. Why?
A: Do not forget to edit lilo.conf, and run /sbin/lilo afterwards whenever
you change the kernel!
Q: How to get my ISA PnP device working?
A: Try turning the "PnP OS installed" option off in bios. Then bios will
initialize the card, and cards will have a better chance to work under Linux.
Q: Why can't I install Mandrake on i486/i386 system?
A: Mandrake 6.x and 7.x packages have been compiled with pentium
optimisation. Sorry, no i386/i486 version.
Repairing things:
Q: I screwed-up my X configuration. How can I repair it?
A: on LILO prompt type "linux single", replace the line "id:5:initdefault:" in
/etc/inittab with
"id:3:initdefault:" in /etc/inittab. Then you can configure the X again with
using XFdrake, "xf86config" or "XF86Setup"
Tips & tricks:
Q: how do i move the window if I cannot reach its uper edge?
A: Hold down the alt key while you use your left mouse button to drag it.
