I got the same problem.
Passwd didnt help either.
Let me know if you get an answer that works.
MacMillan said to ship it back for a refund, but I'd like to fix it instead
of sending it back.

i got 2 problems:
1. I can't login as root, but i can login as my user and su to root.
2., Startx works with root but not the other users
