I'm not sure what you mean by "manually," but I had the same
situation until I added the following line:
append="mem=124M"
above the "root" line in lilo.conf. I'm not sure if placement is
important.
Oh, yes, I also had to run "lilo -v" after editing the file. I use
"124" because my onboard video uses 4M.
