What you are missing is a crossover cable. Available for cheap at your local
computer store or you can make one yourself if you know someone with a crimper
tool (Your college network administrator?).
The "Network Socket" (hub) flips transmit circuit to receive and vice versa
for you. A crossover cable does this by crossing the wires.
CAT 5:
One end
pin1 = orange & white
pin2 = orange
pin3 = green & white
pin6 =green
other end
pin1 = green & white
pin2 = green
pin3 = orange & white
pin6 = orange
