[newbie] HOW TO STOP XSERVER FROM LOADING

I got another problem:
My root-partition is full. As I decided for an graphical login when I 
installed Mandrake, the XServer is loaded before you can login. 
But the Server doesn't start anymore, maybe because the root-partition 
is full. The server more or less hangs until i press Ctrl-Alt-Del.

How can I stop the loading of the graphical login, so that I can delete 
some files from the root-partition in textmode?
