That big white square happened to me when I had
an incorrect memory setting for my video card,
I have an S3 Virge DX with 2 megabytes of
video memory, and I told XF86Setup that I
had 4 megs, which was incorrect, so I experimented
by decrementing counting down until I reached
the correct mem setting.
