Do you remember root's password? If so, log in as root and simply create a
new password for "user". I believe root can change a user's password w/o
using the old one. If not, root can create a new user for you. No need to
reinstall.
If you don't remember root's password, try lgging in as a single user ["linux
1" w/o quotes at the boot prompt]. You might be able to change the password
there, but perhaps a guru can be of more assistance at this point ;o)
