Once you are on the LILO prompt, type linux 3 and hit enter.
That will take you to the console login and will not go into the graphical
login.

I am not sure what difference you mean in "x" and "KDE". KDE is a window
manager for X-windows, like Gnome, Enlightenment, OVLWM and AfterStep.
