...bu it did for me (i use the alsa drivers....do you ?):
load the oss compatible modules snd-pcm-oss and snd-mixer-oss.....
and......check whether kwmsound and kaudioserver are initialized......have a
look at system console to see whether there are error messages about
kwmsound.....
my system lacked desktop sound because kwmsound couldnt get started.......and
the reason for this was that i had not loaded the oss modules.....
check it out.....
