Done that - no effect. Well, the KDE interface and desktop items are now
shown in Russian OK, as are Gnome desktop items, but not Gnome menus. Also,
terminal still shows garbage. How do I change the font of terminal (Konsole,
xterm, ETerm etc), not the font itself, maybe, but encoding?

install with the Mandrake 4.0 rpms or download the binaries from
XFree86.org? It appears that your X configuration is not where the Mandrake
boot scripts are looking for it. Usually all the configuration stuff should
be in /etc/X11. I can only guess at this though.
Nevermind :-) Got Gnome up and running.
