[newbie] Modem trouble

I have managed to configure my internet connection - IP address and all, only 
to have a "modem is busy" message come on when I try to connect.  My modem is 
described as "Megahertz CC-J1336 Fax-Modem".  Does this mean it's a winmodem 
and as Linux doesn't recognize winmodems, I'm out of business here...??
