I have installed on a 2nd hd with Lilo and also without Lilo and booted
from a disk either way works.
When you install Mandrake it will make No changes to your Windows drive
unless you tell it to make them.
If you want to set your new drive as your only drive, install Linux then
reattach your Windows drive as master you can but it isn't necessary. Also
if you choose to install by this means you will need to start the Mandrake
install using a Windows Startup disk inorder to load drivers for your CD-Rom
and mouse.
As long as you have only one version of Linux installed on 1 hd,
wheather that drive is set to master or slave will not effect using your
Linux "boot disk".
I hope this clarifies the questions you had.

   Charles
