I think what my friend is reffering to, is that he found the Linux joystick drivers on the M$ site and not the windows. No irony here just a point of how difficult is to find what you want (especially with the outdated HOWTOS) help or specific things for Linux. We all know why and we all can live with that. It is the price we pay for the great idea of open source software.

The Joystick drivers are part of the kernel, which is why you will not find them elsewhere for Linux.
 
The Microsoft drivers are only applicable to Windows and so have no bearing or irony here.
