Jim....if you booted into the console and then started the
desktop gui with a startx command then all you need to do is
logout of the gui.  In KDE there is an X button just above a
padlock button on the panel at the bottom of your screen. 
Click on this X button and follow the dialog boxes.

If you booted directly into the gui desktop then you don't
shut down the gui to get to the command line.  There are 2
ways to get to a command line.  Both of them will work in the
above situation (started the gui w/startx) as well.  First one
is to open a console window.  There is an icon on the panel
for that.  Second is to use the ctl-alt-fX (where X=2,3,4,5,or
6).  To get back to the gui from one of these consoles you
press alt-f7.
