I am having trouble getting connected to my ISP via Linux (Mandrake
7.0). Here is what is happening:
My modem is set up (drivers installed) and appears to work fine. When
using kppp, the modem picks up, dials, goes through the handshake with the
other computer, and connects giving the speed. kppp then says it is logging
onto the network, but times out waiting for pppd to come up. I have checked
my DNS and server info, I have let kppp set these, and have set them
manually in my resolv.conf. I have also checked my PAP-secrets file
(CHAP-secrets too) and all are fine. My /etc/ppp/options file is is empty
as it should be for kppp. Nothing seems to help. I have tried connecting
manually through the
terminal in kppp and also through minicom. Both will connect, and I can
give my logon and password, I am then assigned IP address, but can't get any
further.
I have now tried the ppp setup from the mandrakeuser site
(http://www.mandrakeuser.org/connect/cppp.html) that uses pppd and chat
scripts. They don't work either. I still dial in, handshake, connect, then
die. My /var/log/messages and it says that I
everything is fine (shows dial, connect, etc) until it says "alarm" then
"disconnect"
I have searched the web, and though it seems that other have had
similar problems, I can't find an answer. I also searched the old postes to
this list and found a letter describing this exact problem, but the only
answer given didn't seem right.
(http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg27367.html) It
just said that the ISP was slow and to try to get a new number. I know that
the ISP works fine because I had this whole thing set up right before (with
help from others at an install party, but I can't get ahold of those people
any more), but I had to re-install (long story).
I would like to use kppp (I know it can work, it used to), but at this
point, anything that works will be fine!
     Thanks in advance!
