[newbie] partition/re-partition/reload

It appears that either my HD or Linux-Mandrake ver 7 is corrupt.  Each time i boot up 
i get errors and the system quits loading.  My idea was to reload Mandrake and start 
again.  What am i doing wrong as the initial install was perfect.

However, each time i try to partition/re-partition/reload I get these error messages:

*       writing of partition table failed at /usr/bin/perl -
or
*       installation partition - table.pm
line 397
or
*       error occured.missing root partition choose package to install
