[newbie] Hanging at "calibrating delay loop"

I've just installed mdk 6.1 on a BP6 motherboard.
When rebooting, the system hangs at "calibrating
delay loop..." and doesn't go any further.
Using the disk created at installation I can still
boot the system, but I can't start it from the
HD. Any hints ?
