When you start mandrake, in the boot text there is a spot where the system
identifies the disks, looks something like

HDA seagate
HDB Quantum
HDC Teac 12 speed
HDD HP Colorado tape

(improvising from the head what it says here).
Can you see what HD.. disk is identifying your CDRom? It should mention
the brandname or so.
That's important too. Probably /dev/cdrom is not pointing to the right
HD block device (i.e. disk).
